Note to reader: This is a bed and breakfast I stayed at during my 2010 Quebec/Maritime trip with a friend. As usual, I didn’t advise the hosts what I was up to until after I paid. I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting the hosts know you read my review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins

You couldn't have a finer Nova Scotia welcome than at Azelia Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast located just outside Antigonish. We'd driven north from this university town, taken a left and then another, all the while getting deeper into bucolic countryside. By the time we arrived at the end of the road Mary Pat and Al Connors were waiting to welcome us with tea and carrot cake.

Turns out this is Al's old family home but the Connors had lived several years in Michigan taken away by his career as a medicinal chemist. Now he's returned to his roots and lectures at St. Francis Xavier university while Mary Pat holds down the bed and breakfast. They've done quite a bit of work on the house including lifting it for a full basement and making changes to suit the bed and breakfast.

Speaking of those changes, when we booked we couldn't quite understand what we were getting into but I'll try to describe it. My friend and I each had our own bedroom but only one had an en suite bathroom (and the TV). The other had a refreshment area. The two bedrooms are rented as a suite, shut off from the main hall with a door that opens into the short secondary hall between them. It suits two travellers like us who prefer separate beds. But of course here we had separate rooms, all for the price of a shared room. It's also a good set up for those travelling with children.

There are reputed to be a couple of good restaurants in Antigonish but we were there on a Sunday night when they were closed. If you have a choice, stay when they restaurants are open. We were not impressed with where we ended up for dinner though it was inexpensive. We had actually tried to get a room for another night but this B&B was so booked up we had to settle for a Sunday night. This is all by way of saying, book early!

Next morning I woke up to sun streaming through the window. I looked outside to where two horses grazed on the sloping fields of Pleasant Valley. There was also morning coffee set up outside our door. Pleasant indeed. Later, for breakfast we sat in the dining room and that's where I photographed the painting I've used to illustrate this bed and breakfast review. It shows the house before it was lifted onto a new foundation. We started out with a mix of raspberries with maple cream, an excellent tea for me and more coffee for my companion, then on to our eggs Neptune with smoked salmon, our pick for the main course. Another entree on offer was an omelette with mixed veggies including asparagus spears. Homemade muffins and oatcakes rounded things out.

We left knowing the memories would linger. What a special place with special people.
