Note 1 to reader: Every Ontario bed and breakfast receives my consideration. I travel incognito, pay where I stay and write reviews of the top 5%. Here is one I recommend. Janette Higgins

Amadeus Haus Bed and Breakfast in Stratford is a delectable confection. The attractive yellow-brick house has a wrap-around porch furnished with creamy caramel wicker and its Victorian detail is picked out in cream, teal and butterscotch. The whole effect is enhanced by award-winning lawns and gardens kept in tip-top shape by host Bill Murray. Bill and his wife, Dorien, (pronounced as in Doreen) have put together the complete package, including good value and ease of access to downtown Stratford and the various theatres.

Inside, the hardwood floors feature intricate cherry heartwood inlay borders. There’s etched and stained glass throughout along with Mozart trivia and Stratford threatre memorabilia. Though a touch small the living room is comfortable and can accommodate all six guests who might be staying. Anyway, you won’t lack for places to sit. There’s that inviting porch and, out back, a gazebo and a patio sitting area by a fountain. And if you insist on lugging your laptop there's wireless high speed internet.

As for the bed and breakfast guest rooms Bill and Dorien have thought of everything. All have keyed entry, comfortable sitting areas, ceiling fans, central air, en suite bathrooms, plus a refrigerator, cable LCD TV, alarm clock and reading lights. In the nightstand you’ll find a flashlight, extra blanket, even a corkscrew. There are lots of towels and facecloths in the bathrooms plus hair dryers and potions for your ablutions. Turns out Dorien has stayed in many bed and breakfasts while on business. Knowing one day she’d like to host one, she kept track of all the things she’d like to see improved. She’s done a great job. Once I pick a bed and breakfast and identify myself to the hosts I usually have a few tips for improvement. Not here.

Upstairs, the rooms are all attractively decorated. The cranberry red Music Room (Room 1) features musical memorabilia and has either a king-size or twin beds. Just let the Murrays know in advance which you’d prefer. The Stratford Room (aka Room 2 and probably my favourite) has a queen-size bed and is painted Wedgwood blue. There’s a king size bed in Room 3 (the Green Room), which has several decorative wall-hung train plates, some with connections to the Stratford of old.

One of the things I look for in doing my bed and breakfast research is a full breakfast with interesting dishes especially in a place like Stratford. So I really like the fact that Dorien and Bill go all out at breakfast, too. You’ll have all the usual options to start; cereals, fruit salad, fresh baked goods. And one not so usual; homemade yogurt cheese. The hot entrée is always changing. It could be quiche, strata, bread pudding, breakfast toast cups, specialty pancakes or variations on French toast.

Bottom line, if you’re a Stratford Festival fan I think you’ll find this bed and breakfast ‘as you like it’.

Note 2 to reader: I appreciate your support of the continuation of my research by letting Bill and Dorien know you read my consumer review of their bed and breakfast on this bbontario website. Many thanks! Janette Higgins, Travel Writer
